On February 14, 2024, I had the opportunity and privilege of meeting with Berry Razi via Zoom audio whom many people have now come to know as Phenomenology on the social media platform X.
After the interview concluded I found out the recording had failed, and I didn't have time to try to figure out what happened because I had to leave to go to Mass. There are very few occasions where a Catholic mass and Saint Valentine's Day intersect but, on this day, it was Ash Wednesday, a day that in the Christian Church is the beginning of Lent, a Season of reflection, sacrifice, and atonement, as well as for good deeds and solemn prayer. After two Masses, in which we’re standing room only in a church that seats 600 people, it wasn’t lost on me that the number of believers were far from dwindling, especially after hearing reports that the three previous Masses had been similarly attended.
Why is this experience important when writing about someone who is a voice on X Spaces that I have never met? The most powerful is that I had just spent 45 minutes in conversation with someone who spends her days in her bed, who suffers constant pain, and often has seizures due to a very rare degenerative neurological condition that went undiagnosed for years, yet somehow everyday she finds the strength and the will to use the only gifts she has left to give to fight on, for the sake of her family, her country, and for her sanity, which by every measure she has a right to preserve.
I’ll be frank, her situation is dire, and her quality of life is not good. She has an opportunity to receive what could be life changing treatment, possibly lifesaving that is not yet available here in the United States of America. She has been a fighter all her life, but her time is running out. This treatment needs to happen now. There’s a Give Send Go at the bottom of this article with more information about how you can help make that happen. In full disclosure I have personally contributed and will continue to do so. This is not a tax-deductible contribution, but neither are your contributions to political candidates who give you nothing. She gives her all every day, because that is all she has to give. She won’t say these things, however I am not embarrassed in the least.
Ms. Phenom is a humble person, not because she has been humbled by her disability. Because before she came to X, she built a successful business from the ground up. Having fought back from an illness that as a young person doctors told her would leave her barren, she knew that there had to be a better way and began the journey that brought her to naturopathic medicine and a healthy life. This eventually led to her creating and building a naturopathic medicine publication. Editing and writing involves people skills that are innate to be successful, this is especially true when working in a field as nuanced and challenging as natural medicine. She was successful for nearly two decades before falling prey to a mystery illness that would take several years and hundreds of thousands of dollars to eventually diagnose.
As her condition worsened and her mobility became more an issue Razi started to explore social media and eventually came upon Twitter-Spaces (now X), which was intriguing, as it allowed her to use her still strong voice while not being burdened with her physical disability as a distraction.
Razi began what became a kindred relationship with America Mission founders Dustin Stockton and Jennifer Lawrence, who were rebuilding their online presence after having their accounts banned with the rest of conservatives. Each day they would co-host spaces at 10AM and as Dustin and Jennifer made inroads based on their extensive political experience, they developed something special and uniquely theirs.
Soon BerryRazi (Phenom for short) was off to create her own Twitter Niche. While she didn’t have any idea her spaces would grow in popularity or that her following would explode, she is as kind and respectful now as she was on day one; though hosting a larger space does come with unique challenges which often require co-host to help manage.
Her tenure on X has not been without some controversy. While anyone who puts themselves in the public sphere takes a risk of being attacked, the current crop of self-described cyber sleuths is not interested in facts, rather what they perceive as dark and dirty enough to discredit someone. In this case a group made it their mission to challenge the veracity of Razi’s illness based on a fund-raising website that she herself did not set up. It’s not unusual for well-meaning people to do this sort of thing and often funds are returned to donors because of inactivity. Regardless of the website, she had not disclosed her illness, been a beggar for donations, or used her illness to draw any attention to herself. However, because of this challenge, she was forced to address it and a very nasty public argument ensued. Suffice to say her popularity has not suffered, on the contrary, her audience has grown. She’s even been asked, and she accepted a volunteer roll in a new grassroots organization that helps to organize conservative America First people to become active in their local political organization called Assemble-X. They are forming chapters in all 50 states and every one of them knows about X-Spaces hosted by Phenomenology.
Razi is a staunchly protective Mom, and she, like all parents, is concerned with what children are exposed to in today’s world, and for what kind future they will have. She has worked to instill her conservative values and looks forward to seeing them become beautiful strong young women.
Razi’s message to everyone is "don’t wait to get involved. Don’t wait to say something. Don’t let your feelings go unheard. Make a difference with the gifts you are given. Don’t be afraid”.
