Editor’s note: Considering the is-he-or-is-he-not going to make it to the end of his term situation we have been facing for the past several months, it’s apropos that we acknowledge today is “National Veep Day”. Article II of Section 1’s Clause 6 extensively talks about the processes the State must take before it decides on a new president and/or vice president. The 25th Amendment further clarifies it.
💫Fun facts:
1) Up until 1800, the vice president position went to the person with the second-highest number of votes. In 1800, a tie happened and then the constitution was amended to allow people to vote separately for their favorite vice president candidates.
2) After Nixon resigned, Gerald Ford became the first person in history that a president was sworn into the Oval Office without being elected as president or vice president.
3) If both the President and Vice President are removed/die/become disabled, Congress can declare what officer shall then act as president until a new president is elected (or if either of the former can return to the office unless they are deceased{duh}).
4) There are fourteen VPs who became presidents due to elections or the sudden deaths/resignations of their presidents.
