Editor’s note: On August 4, 1790, President George Washington signed into law the 1790 Tariff Act. It authorized the creation of a fleet of ten cutters ~ Revenue Cutter Service ~ which would enforce the first tariff laws enacted by Congress under the Constitution. In 1915, the fleet merged with the U.S. Life Saving Service to form the maritime entity U.S. Coast Guard. It was overseen by the Treasury Department until 1967 when it transferred to the just-created Department of Transportation. Since 2003, it reports to the Department of Homeland Security. The Coast Guard is the only military branch that operates under the DHS during peacetime.
“The U.S. Coast Guard is a humanitarian and security service. It protects the United States' borders and economic and security interests abroad; and defends its sovereignty by safeguarding sea lines of communication and commerce across U.S. territorial waters and its Exclusive Economic Zone.”
Grand Haven, Michigan, also known as Coast Guard City, USA, annually sponsors the Coast Guard Festival around August 4th and it is known to be the largest community celebration for a branch of our U.S. Armed Forces.
