The Professional DC Lawyer Turned RNC's Chief Legal Eagle: Charlie Spies
Will he foil the deep state's plan to stop a Trump 2024 victory or will he snatch defeat from the jaws of victory like his predecessor?
Meet Charles “Charlie” Spies, another one of those DC lawyer types we all know and love. Throughout the early 90s, Spies attended the University of Michigan and pursued a BA in political science. In the late 90s, he graduated from Georgetown with his JD. In 1999, Charlie Spies became the counsel to Commissioner Daryl Wold at the Federal Election Commission.
A year later, Spies worked as an attorney for a law firm until becoming election law counsel for the RNC until 2005. He moved on to the Republican Governors Association to be their general counsel and CFO for a couple of years.
Spies moved on to become the CFO and counsel for Mitt Romney's 2008 campaign for president, where he developed and managed the campaign's budget and legal compliance with the Federal Election Commission, IRS, and various state regulators.
During his Romney days, Spies got intimately involved in the wonderful world of super PACs. He helped run the notorious pro-Romney Restore Our Future super PAC, which was instrumental in the 2012 election cycle. His role with the pro-Jeb Right to Rise USA super PAC in the 2016 cycle comes to mind as well. With Charlie at the helm, these super PACs managed to bend to campaign finance rules like a contortionist at a circus.
Spies concurrently worked for law firms like Clark Hill and Dickinson Wright throughout the years before retreading familiar ground. Further, he has spoken on political and election law issues on a number of networks such as Fox, CNN, Fox Business, and various other national and local news programs. He’s also published numerous articles and commentaries on various legal issues, as well as retained his ties to Georgetown. He’s got connections.
Last month, Spies was re-appointed to the RNC, this time as their chief counsel. This move comes at a critical time for the RNC, now under the new Trump-approved leadership of Michael Whatley, a former chairman of the North Carolina Republican Party, and Lara Trump, former President Trump's daughter-in-law.
His appointment along with Christina Bobb’s appointment as senior counsel for election integrity, demonstrate that the RNC is doubling down on its efforts to ensure that voting and election-related concerns are addressed adequately this time around. Christina Bobb, a prominent figure in defending the GOP's claims of a stolen 2020 election just hit with charges related to the alternate electors’ case out of Arizona, compliments Spies' more moderate stance on the issue. Bobb is facing potential serious prison time. Well, that complicates things, to say the least…
With his time as counsel for multiple Chairmen at the RNC, CFO for prominent political groups, and his extensive experience in election law and finance, Spies is expected to guide the RNC through tough times ahead. His past is questionable, so let’s hope he truly knows what he’s doing. His role in shaping the RNC's approach to election integrity will be crucial as the organization navigates the ever-changing landscape of American politics. There is simply no room for mistakes this election year and this isn’t his first rodeo; so, despite the deep state pressure, he better stand and deliver because America’s future is at stake!
